Ever since my Dad died when I was 17yrs old, setting goals for myself was always difficult. I could never envision what I wanted out of life. Plan for the future. Until I met my husband, then I had a wedding to plan, even that came with its challenges, when he was in and out of work. However, we made it and had the best day ever.
Moving forward 17months and we both feel settled now, he is in a reliable job, as am I. Feeling settled as a couple, and me knowing who I am and what I/we want from life. Setting goals has been a challenge for me but I am learning to and have worked out the best way which works for me and thought I would pass it on for anyone who is struggling to focus on life like I did for over 30 yrs.
"You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream" - C.S. Lewis
Step1. Define Your Goal Clearly
- Be Specific: Clearly define what you want to achieve. Instead of saying, "I want to be healthier," specify, "I want to lose 10 pounds in the next three months by exercising three times a week."
- Make It Measurable: Include measurable criteria to track your progress. This helps you
know when you’ve achieved the goal and keeps you motivated.
Step 2. Break It Down
- Create Actionable Steps: Break your goal into smaller, manageable tasks. For example, if your goal is to write a book, your steps might include writing an outline, drafting chapters, and revising.
- Set Milestones: Establish milestones to measure your progress along the way. These mini-goals provide a sense of accomplishment and keep you on track.
Step 3. Set a Realistic Timeline
- Determine Deadlines: Assign deadlines for each of your smaller tasks and milestones. This creates a sense of urgency and helps to prevent procrastination.
- Consider Resources and Constraints: Be realistic about the time and resources you have available. Adjust your timeline accordingly to ensure that your goal is achievable.
Step 4 Stay Accountable
- Track Your Progress: Regularly review your progress to ensure you’re on track. Use tools like journals, apps, or charts to monitor your achievements.
- Seek Support: Share your goals with a friend, mentor, or accountability partner who can provide encouragement, feedback, and motivation.
5. Review and Adjust
- Reflect on Your Progress: Periodically assess your progress and reflect on what’s working and what isn’t. This helps you identify any obstacles or areas where you need to adjust your plan.
- Be Flexible: If circumstances change or you encounter unexpected challenges, be willing to adjust your goals or the steps needed to achieve them. Flexibility ensures that you stay on track even when things don’t go as planned.
These steps will help you set clear, actionable, and achievable goals, increasing your chances of success and fulfillment.
